Tanzania is a union of the former British colonies of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and has been independent since 1964. Julius Nyerere (1922-99), shown on the obverse, was president of Tanzania 1964-85. The copper five senti shown was issued 1966-1984. In 1982, US$1 = 9.4 shillings.
