Sweden 1720 2 mark KM-XM39
This specimen was lot 3092 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,751 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEDEN, Friedrich I. 1720-1751. 2 Mark 1720, Stockholm. Auf die Krönung des Königs. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS61. Feine Patina. (kingdom of Sweden, Frederick I, 1720-51, two marks of 1720, Stockholm mint, on the king's coronation. Rare, especially in this condition, Nicely toned.)"
The Scandinavian countries and Sweden in particular, have a tradition of striking largesse coins to be thrown to the crowd on state occasions such as weddings, funerals and coronations. This largesse two mark was struck along with the regular two mark (KM 385) in 1720; both are scarce. In 1720, Sweden was conceding defeat in the Great Northern War, surrendering the Baltic provinces to Russia, Bremen and Verden to Hanover, most of Swedish Pomerania to Prussia and recognizing Danish control of Schleswig-Holstein. The state was bankrupt.
Recorded mintage: 2,200 plus 19,000 of KM 385.
Specification: silver.
