Sincona sale 76, lot 1609

This specimen was lot 1609 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 13,500 CHF (about US$16,386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWEDEN. Friedrich I. 1720-1751. 4 Mark 1720, Stockholm. Mit der Münzmeistersignatur L - C (Lorentz Careelberg, Münzmeister in Stockholm, 1706-1722). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. NGC MS64. Prachtexemplar mit feiner Patina. (kingdom of Sweden, Frederick I, 1720-51, four mark of 1720, Stockholm mint, with mintmaster's initials "LC". Very rare, especially in this condition, Uncirculated, Cabinet piece with nice patina.)"

This denomination, which was worth about 9/16 of a riksdaler, was struck for both Ulrika Eleonora (KM 386) and Frederick I (shown here) in 1720. This type was struck again in 1732 and 1737-38. The denomination was retired in 1755.

Recorded mintage: 10,000 (which may include KM 386).
