St. Gall 1810-K 5 batzen
This specimen was lot 1697 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,699 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | St. Gallen | Stadt und Kanton. 5 Batzen 1810, St. Gallen. Kein Punkt nach der Wertzahl. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. (canton of St. Gall, five batzen of 1810, without dot by date. Very rare in this condition, Uncirculated, Cabinet piece.)"
Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type was struck 1810-13 and is rather expensive in nice condition.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 3.88 g.
