St. Gall 1809-K kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2977 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,800 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Kreuzer 1809. Von grösster Seltenheit in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (canton of St. Gall, kreuzer of 1809, Of the highest rarity in this condition, About uncirculated.)"
Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type, one quarter of a batzen, was struck 1807-16.
