St Gall 1808 half batzen rev DSLR.jpg

Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. In the early nineteenth century, before unification, four kreuzer = one batzen and 10 batzen = one frank and 4 franken = one thaler. This half batzen was struck in St. Gall 1807-10 and is fairly common up thru Very Fine condition.
