St. Gall 1807 1/4 batzen
The first specimen was lot 2974 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$270 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Viertelbatzen (Kreuzer) 1807. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. (canton of St. Gall, quarter batzen (kreuzer) of 1807. Rare, About extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 3569 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$398 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | St. Gallen | Stadt und Kanton. Viertelbatzen (Kreuzer) 1807, St. Gallen. Gutes vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of St. Gall, quarter batzen or kreuzer of 1807, St. Gall mint. Good extremely fine.)"
This specimen was lot 3521 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Viertelbatzen (Kreuzer) 1807, St. Gallen. Wertangabe "1/4 SCHWEIZ. BAZEN". Variante mit Mzz. K (Kunkler) beidseitig. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of St. Gall, quarter batzen or kreuzer of 1807, St. Gall mint. Good very fine.)"
Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1807-08. Some specimens lack the initial "K".
