St. Gall 1807 6 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2973 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, 6 Kreuzer 1807. Selten. Nur 4510 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr schön. Überprägungsspuren. (canton of St. Gall, six kreuzer of 1807. Rare. Only 4510 pieces struck, Very fine, Overstruck.)"
Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type is rare.
