Spain 1842-Seg maravedi
The first specimen shown was lot 327 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 100 euros (about US$165 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1842. Segovia. 1 maravedí. Bella. Escasa así. S/C-. (One maravedi of 1842, Segovia mint, handsome, scarce thus, about uncirculated.)
The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This one maravedi was worth 1/34 of a real; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Jubia, Segovia and Madrid 1842-43 and was accompanied by copper two, four and eight maravedis. The type is not scarce and this mint is the commonest of the three.
