Sincona sale 11, lot 3266

This specimen was lot 3266 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPANIEN Königreich Fernando VII. 1808-1833. 8 Reales 1811, Valencia. Mmz. SG. Fast sehr schön-sehr schön. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, eight reales of 1811, Valencia mint. Very fine to good very fine.)"

In 1808, the French army invaded Spain and by 1811 had overwhelmed most Spanish resistance. One holdout was the port of Valencia, sustained by aid from the British navy. There the Supreme Junta issued eight reales of this type in 1811.

Recorded mintage: unknonwn but scarce.
