This specimen was of lot 24760 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 4 Escudos 1781-PJ Madrid, AU55 NGC, quite attractive with toned luster and no flaws." This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1772-85. It is distinguished from later four escudos of Charles III (see KM 418.1a) by its higher fineness. Altho some dates are rare, this date is common.
