Mexico 1781-Mo FF 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 31218 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1781 Mo-FF AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint, A choice coin for the designation, with essentially full mint luster, sharp details, fewer than the expected handling marks and thus superb eye appeal. One of the finest seen examples - and tied with a single other coin, the 1784 Mo-FM in this collection, for second finest certified by NGC - of the entire Charles III regular bust type. Also a rare date, missing in Eliasberg and unconfirmed in Burzio: the cataloguer could only trace 4 other specimens of this date, including the one in the Banco de Mexico collection, all in lower preservation. A coin that should attract type and date collectors alike and thus likely to see competitive bidding. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type, the third showing the bust of Charles III, was struck 1773-88 and is the first type that can be considered reasonably available. This type comes in two varieties; "inverted mintmark" (shown here) and "upright mintmark". The inverted mintmark variety prevailed 1773-1788; the upright mintmark appeared 1772-73 and 1788 only.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.53 g, 0.901 fine gold, .392 troy oz AGW.
