This specimen was lot 71437 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Escudos, 1781-LIMA MI. Lima Mint. Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Damage, AU Details. Displaying an interesting punch in the form of a cruciform pattern of four annulets, this impressive example otherwise lacks much in the way of any actual handling." This type was struck steadily 1772-84 but remains very scarce. All the gold coins were reduced from 0.901 fine to 0.875 fine in 1785.
