This specimen was lot 1100 in Jean Elsen sale 118 (Brussels, September 2013), where it sold for €600 (about US$946 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ESPAGNE, Charles III (1759-1788), AV 4 escudos, 1773 PJ, Madrid. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Petit défaut de flan sur la tranche. Très Beau. (Spain, Charles III (1759-88), gold four escudos of 1773, Madrid mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Rare, small planchet fault on the rim, very fine.)"

This type was struck in Madrid 1772-85 (KM 418.1) and Seville 1772-85 (KM 418.2). The four escudos of Charles III are more available than eight escudos of the same period. It is distinguished by later issues of Charles III (1786-88) by being 0.901 fine instead of 0.875 fine gold. Four escudos prior to this type are all rare.
