Künker sale 336, lot 6255

This specimen was lot 6255 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,701 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPANIEN, KÖNIGREICH, Carlos III. 1759-1788. 4 Escudos 1772, M-PJ, Madrid. GOLD. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldpatina, vorzüglich. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, 1759-88, four escudos of 1772, Madrid mint. Scarce in this condition, attractive example with fine gold toning, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Madrid 1772-85 (KM 418.1) and Seville 1772-85 (KM 418.2). The four escudos of Charles III are more available than eight escudos of the same period. It is distinguished by later issues of Charles III (1786-88) by being 0.901 fine instead of 0.875 fine gold. Four escudos prior to this type are all rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
