Spain 1772-Seg maravedi
The first specimen was lot 425 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, Spain, July 2014), where it sold for €110 (about US$176 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1772. Carlos III. Segovia. 1 maravedí. Atractiva. EBC-. (Charles III, 1759-88, one maravedi of 1772, Segovia mint. Attractive extremely fine.)"
The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This one maravedi was worth 1/272 of a dollar; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Segovia 1772-75 and in Madrid 1770-71 and was accompanied by copper four, two and eight maravedis. The type is not rare but scarce in nice condition.
