Spain 1770M maravedi rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 266 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$290 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1770. Carlos III. Madrid. 1 maravedí. Muy bella. Brillo original. Escasa así. S/C-. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, one maravedi of 1770, madrid mint. Very handsome, original luster, scarce thus, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck at Madrid 1770-71, Segovia 1777-75 and 1789 and an undated issue from Pamplona. Only the Madrid product is rare tho all the dates are scarce in nice condition. This copper coin featured the king's bust two years before the portrait type was introduced to the silver coinage in 1772. Copper two, four and eight maravedis also exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a very scarce date.

Specification: copper, this specimen 1,11 g.

Catalog reference: KM 405.1, AC. 27, Cayón-10928.
