Spain 1770-S CF 1/2 real

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The specimen shown is a Spanish half real struck in 1770 at the Seville mint. Assayer CF is recorded for the years 1769-83. These coins were lower in fineness than the colonial issues (Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, etc.) and thus were discounted. There is no reason to think that these coins are rare but they are very difficult to find in the American numismatic marketplace and are likely seriously underpriced.
