This specimen was lot 3154 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,495. The catalog description[1] noted, "1773 FM 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. EF-40 (NGC). Older standard bust of Carlos III, different hair and armor style, legends around, date below/type as above. Medium gold with peripheral orange toning on both sides, some tiny contact marks in the field before the king's portrait, tiny rim nick atop reverse, reverse still lustrous. A nice example of this challenging denomination. Purchased from Mortimer Hammel."

This specimen shows the upright mintmark and assayer's initials as used 1772-73. The style with the inverted mintmark was issued 1773-88.

Specification: 13.54 grams, .901 fine gold, .392 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 13.42 grams, 30.90 mm diameter.
