Schulman 389-230r.jpg

This specimen was lot 230 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,339 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain - 8 Reales 1773 PJ, Silver, CARLOS III 1759-1788 Madrid mint. Bust right. Rev. crowned arms divides value. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS AU58." This Spanish equivalent of the bust dollar was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-88. The SCWC lists the Madrid issues (shown here) as rather scarcer than the Seville issues. All are very scarce, especially compared to the enormous output of the Latin American mints. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1772.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW, this specimen 26.80 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12010, Cal. 876, KM 414.1, Dav-1700.
