Spain 1773-Seg 4 maravedis
This specimen was lot 72774 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 4 Maravedis, 1773. Segovia Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-58 Brown. Awesome quality for the type, this fully brown specimen offers a pleasing appearance and some underlying luster, along with little actual handling present." The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This four maravedis was worth 1/68 of a dollar; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Segovia 1772-88 and in Madrid 1770-71 and was accompanied by copper one, two and eight maravedis. The type is not rare but scarce in nice condition.
