Spain 1774-M PJ 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 292 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,250 € (about US$1,633 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1774. Carlos III. Madrid. PJ. 4 escudos. Nice. Original luster. Scarce in this condition. EBC/EBC+ [choice extremely fine]." This type was struck at Madrid (shown here) and Seville 1772-85. While the Latin American mints concentrated on eight escudos, the Spanish mints produced mostly half escudos and two escudos. This four escudos is not common but is more available than the rare eight escudos. The four escudos of 1786-88, which were 0.875 fine gold, are common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.901 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW, this specimen 13.51 g.
