This specimen was of lot 24758 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III 4 Reales 1774-CF Seville, MS65 NGC, full mint brilliance with aged cabinet patina, a superb coin with excellent eye appeal. Rare in this lofty designation." In contrast to the very scarce eight reales, Spanish four reales are fairly available though they do not turn up often at American coin shows. This type was struck at Madrid and Seville 1772-84 and 1788. The year 1774 is common for Seville, rare for Madrid. Assayer CF is recorded for 1767-83.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11771, KM 413.2.
