Spain 1775-M PJ 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72249 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 4 Reales, 1775-M PJ. Madrid Mint. Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, AU Details. This intriguing 4 Reales piece is aggressively chopmarked on both sides with Chinese characters. Despite having obviously circulated in East Asia, the underlying coin is remarkably well-preserved. The unaffected areas show crisp detail and the surfaces have an elegant deep gray tone with abundant luster. A singular coin with eye appeal and historical charm in equal measure. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck at Madrid 1772-84 and 1788 and at Seville 1772-82 and 1788. Assayer PJ is recorded for the years 1772-1782.
