Aureo sale 232, lot 1318

This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-84. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729.

The second specimen shown was lot 1318 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 1,950 € (about US$3,218 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1775. Madrid. PJ. 8 escudos. Sin punto entre los ensayadores. Bella. Brillo original. Rara y más así. EBC-/EBC+. (Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1775, Madrid mint, without period between assayers' initials, nice original luster, extremely fine.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.
