Spain 1776-S CF 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 31084 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $12,240. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1776/5 S-CF MS63+ NGC, Seville mint. A superb "wonder coin," benefitting from fully original surfaces, sheathed in satin and toned to a sublime harvest-gold color. The devices have benefitted from a superior strike, rendering the reverse especially in nearly presentation-worthy quality, with only minor adjustments through the reverse shield and light planchet laminations in the King's hair noted for the sake of completeness. Closer inspection reveals the 6/5 overdate with little difficulty, a palpable mint bloom traversing the surfaces and illuminating touches of cupric elements at the rims. An offering deserving of the utmost bidder attention and distinction, owing not least to its coveted "plus" designation for superior technical quality, and one of only three representatives we can locate coming to auction in recent decades. From the WTR Collection." This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-84. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.901 fine gold.
