This specimen was lot 3629 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia. 8 Escudos, 1776-NR JJ. Charles III. Older standard bust to right. Reverse: Crowned Hapsburg arms, within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Popular year for American collectors. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Obverse Scratched, Cleaned)." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.
