This specimen was lot 24568 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1777P-SF Popayán, AU55 NGC, an attractive coin with abundant mint luster and sharply struck details. The planchet is problem-free and there are no adjustment marks. A perfect type coin for this series."
This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1772-84 and is the most common gold coin of Charles III. It remains much in demand and is still expensive. Many overdates are recorded.
