This specimen was lot 20535 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1777/6-DA, AU55 NGC, unusually sharply struck with toned mint luster and no adjustment marks or other flaws. Very scarce type in this quality." This type was struck 1772-89 and is the first type that can be called reasonably available. The government took over the mint in 1770 and enlarged it, increasing production plus the debasement of 1772 likely caused prior issues to be melted. The SCWC mentions the overdate but awards it no premium.
