Chile 1778-So DA 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 20219 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1778(8/7/6)-DA. Charles III (1759-88). PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. SCARCE overdate. A nice wholesome original example sure to expand even the most advanced collection." This type was struck 1772-89 and is the first type that can be called reasonably available. The government took over the mint in 1770 and enlarged it, increasing production plus the debasement of 1772 likely caused prior issues to be melted. The SCWC mentions a rare variety with the "ET" spelled "TE".
