Aureo sale 243, lot 618

This specimen was lot 618 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 2,650 € (about US$4,003 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1778. Madrid. PJ. 8 escudos. Parte de brillo original. Muy rara. EBC-/EBC. (Eight escudos of 1778, Madrid mint. Very nice, some original luster, extremely fine.)"

This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-84. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.
