Spain G91-2533r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1187 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €220 (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ESPAGNE, Charles III (1759-1788), AV 2 escudos, 1778 PJ, Madrid. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Petit coup sur la tranche. presque Très Beau. (Spain, Charles III, 1759-88, gold two escudos of 1778, madrid mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms with Order of the Golden Fleece around. Small rim nicks, about very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 2533 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[2] noted, "Spain. 2 Escudos, 1778-PJ (Madrid) NGC EF. Charles III. NGC graded Extremely Fine, Details (Edge Filing, Cleaned)." This type was struck in Madrid 1772-85 (KM 417.1) and Seville 1773-79 (KM 417.2) and is not especially rare tho choice specimens are always in demand. Two escudos were struck in metropolitan Spain 1738-1833 in considerable numbers and are quite a bit more common than their counterparts from Latin America, where the two escudos was a rare denomination. Assayer PJ is listed for 1765-81. The second specimen looks to be an overdate, 1788/7.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.901 fine gold, .196 troy oz AGW, the first specimen 6,67 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12476, C.C.T.-357; Fr-286; KM-417.1.
