from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 197

This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type struck 1772-89. Later issues (1785-89) were only 0.875 fine. This specimen was lot 197 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, bust 2 escudos, Charles III, 1778MJ. Problem-free VF, top of reverse rim weak (as made)." This is a very rare type and this is the first specimen we have found for the Wiki of any date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.901 fine gold, .196 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 6.66 grams.
