This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type struck 1772-89. Later issues (1785-89) were only 0.875 fine. This specimen was lot 3483 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "1778 MJ 4 escudos. Lima mint. AU-55 (NGC). Lustrous deep yellow gold with orange highlights, attractive, scattered signs of handling. A rare denomination. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.901 fine gold, .392 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 13.47 grams, 30.20 mm diameter.
