Chile 1777-So DA 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 34491 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $3,613.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile: Charles III gold 2 Escudos 1777/6 So-DA VF25 NGC, Santiago mint, Truly a unique offering, entirely missing from Calico as well as the major collections of Norweb and Eliasberg. Despite a heavily worn portrait of Charles III, the legends and bold overdate remain well preserved while the reverse is essentially unimpacted by circulation, retaining heavy originality. An opportunity unlikely to be seen again for some time." All the two escudos of Charles III are rare. This is the first one we have posted. The SCWC lists 1773-74, 1782-83 and 1786-89.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.901 fine gold.
