Spain 1729-S 8 reales
This specimen was lot 74626 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 8 Reales, 1729-S. Seville Mint. Philip V. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Despite the noted minor cleaning, this crown-sized issue nevertheless enchants through its resounding level of detail remaining and a pleasing gunmetal gray tone as well. From the David Sterling Collection." This type, the ancestor of the familiar pillar dollar of Latin America, is recorded in the SCWC for 1728-29. Both dates are tough. It is the first eight reales struck at Seville since 1718. For some reason, this issue omitted the denomination ("R 8") and the assayer ("P") and is scarce thus. We don't the omission was accidental as the mintmark "S" appears on the shield side.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver.
