Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 238

This specimen was lot 238 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €14,000 (about US$18,476 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1729. Felipe V. Madrid. JJ. 8 escudos. "pocos ejemplares conocidos". Primer busto. Valor E-8 en anverso. Mínimas hojitas. Bella. Brillo original. Moneda exenta de pago de tasas de exportación. Ex Áureo & Calicó Selección 2014, nº 192. Ex Colección López Chaves. Rarísima. Sólo hemos tenido este ejemplar. EBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Philip V, eight escudos of 1729, Madrid mint, first bust, value "*E*8*" on obverse. Minor marks, handsome, original luster. This coin is exempt from any export fee. Extremely rare, the only example we know of, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at Madrid 1728-29 using several busts varying in the style of the wig. More were struck 1729-30 (KM 346.1), then production ceased there until 1750. The portrait type was introduced to Mexico in 1732.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.
