Spain 1729-S P 8 escudos
The first specimen was lot 1176 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $42,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Seville, Spain, gold milled 8 escudos, Philip V, 1729P, NGC MS 62, finest known in NGC census. Choice strike with nice luster, well centered, no wear and just a few faint marks, also with faint trace of light red toning at rims, the finest of five entries in NGC census (next highest grade AU 58), desirable final date of shield/cross type, simply the best." The second specimen was lot 33295 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "Spain: Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1729 S-P AU53 NGC, Seville mint. The final year for this design before the adoption of the bust type, most pieces showing characteristically weak obverse features owing to roller die production. Though admitted friction exists to bound the assigned grade, this has notably little impact on the coin's overall appeal, a mildly glassy texture still discernable underlying the fields. The first example of the date we have offered in over 4 years, and a piece which begs in hand inspection to be fully appreciated." This type was struck in Seville 1719-29 and is rare. Portrait 8 escudos were also struck in Seville in 1729 (KM 346.2) and are extremely rare.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.798 troy oz AGW.
