Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 46085

This specimen was lot 46085 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 4 Reales, 1628-SR. Seville Mint. Philip IV. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. A decently struck and largely untoned cob with nearly full date and complete shield." This type was struck by the hammer at Seville 1624-37, 1641-44 and 1648. Similar four reales were struck at Toledo, Segovia, Madrid, Burgos (rare), Cuenca (rare), Valladolid (rare) and Granada (rare). Segovia was also producing four reales using roller dies (KM 98) but no other mint followed suit in the seventeenth century.
