Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72219
SB1122-72219r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72219 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1593-Io. Segovia Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Damage, AU Details. This bright Spanish Cob shows crisp detail on its compact flan. The mintmark to the left is softly struck but distinct, while the denomination and final two digits of the date on the right are bold and clear. The reverse shows some flatness but retains well-centered castles and lions. The noted damage takes the form of a few shallow gouges on the lower rim on the obverse. This silver minor is satisfyingly detailed and quite charming overall. From the Pat Johnson Collection." Assayer I (or IO) is listed for 1591-95. While machine struck four reales exist from Segovia from the 1590's, this example is a cob.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.61 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-3852, Cal-546.
