Áureo y Calicó sale 391, lot 1244

This specimen was lot 1244 in Aureo y Calicó sale 391 (Barcelona, June 2022), where it sold for €225 (about US$283 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1591. Felipe II. Segovia. I. 4 reales. Sin las águilas en las armas de Sicilia. Ex Áureo 04/07/2000, nº 275. Ex Colección Isabel de Trastámara 26/05/2016, nº 409. Muy rara. MBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Philip II, four reales of 1591, Segovia mint, without the eagles in the arms of Sicily. Very rare, about very fine.)"

This type is listed for Seville for 1590-97 and undated. During this decade, Segovia was installing machinery for milled coinage but the production of cobs continued simultaneously. At some point, the Segovia mint adopted the aqueduct as its mintmark.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13,43 g.
