Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75679

This specimen was lot 75679 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1591-H. Seville Mint. Philip II. NGC AU-53. A wholesome example of the popular Cob style coinage. While crudely made, many of the important details remain." This specimen was offered again as lot 75720 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $336. This cob four reales is among the first dated coins of Spain. Cayón notes that the 1591/0 is common while the regular date is rare. Similar cobs were struck at Valladolid, Granada, Madrid, Segovia and Toledo.
