This specimen was lot 23025 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Florin (2 Shillings), 1928. NGC AU-55. Struck the year South Africa replaced the Red Ensign flag with the then new Van Riebeeck flag (Dutch), which would remain in use until 1994. Light breaks to the frost with plenty of remaining luster. Far nicer than most examples encountered." The South African florins of George V run 1923-36 with this subtype issued 1923-30. The 1928 is a better date despite the seemingly ample mintage.
Recorded mintage: 1,092,000.
Specification: 11.31 g, 0.800 fine silver, 28.5 mm diameter.
