This specimen was lot 23024 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $105.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2 1/2 Shillings, 1928. NGC AU-55. Attractive tangerine and smokey blue toned surfaces with very limited amounts of wear." The 2½ shillings or half crown was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1951 and 0.500 fine thereafter. The first years of issue (KM 19.1) varies from this type by having "2½ SHILLINGS 2½" in the reverse legend. In 1931, the reverse was modified to read "SUID AFRIKA" instead of "ZUID AFRIKA" and struck in this form until 1936.

Recorded mintage: 984,000, a slightly better date.

Specification: 14.14 g, 0.800 fine silver, 32.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-19.2; Hern-S279.
