Sincona sale 95, lot 4462

This specimen was lot 4462 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 15,000 CHF (about US$20,790 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, Doppelduplone 1787, Solothurn. Dreiblättriger Laubrand. Selten. Fast FDC. Überprägungsspuren. Vermutlich wurde diese Doppelduplone auf einen französischen doppelten Louis d'or überprägt. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, double duplone of 1787, Solothurn mint. Rare, About Mint State, Signs of overstrike. This double duplone may have been struck over a double louis d'or of France.)"

This rare type was struck in 1787 along with single (Fr-391), half (Fr-392) and quarter duplones (Fr-393). The denomination was struck again 1796-97 with the date in the exergue instead of to the right, as here.
