Solothurn 1787 10 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2591 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$537 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, 10 Kreuzer 1787, Solothurn. Fehlprägung: Zweifachprägung mit inkusen Rückseitendetails. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Hübsche Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, ten kreuzer of 1787, Solothurn mint. Error strike with the obverse details showing on the reverse. Extremely rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Attractively toned.)"
This coin is listed in the SCWC as a 2½ batzen. It was also struck 1794-95. We can't tell if this example was struck from clashed dies or is a brockage (struck against another coin struck to the die). Clashed dies normally show in the fields, not the devices, while a brockage will usually show one side completely reversed. The reverse motto, "CUNCTA PER DEUM", translates as, "United by God." In Germany, the convention thaler was 120 kreuzer but 160 kreuzer in Switzerland. Four kreuzer made a batzen and ten kreuzer was 1/16 thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 2.07 g.
