Silesia in 1648; Brieg is S of Breslau and Liegnitz is NW

This specimen was lot 259 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHLESIEN, LIEGNITZ-BRIEG, HERZOGTUM, Johann Christian und Georg Rudolf, 1602-1621. Reichstalerklippe 1621, Reichenstein. Beider Hüftbilder mit umgelegten Mänteln einander gegenüber, darüber Reichsapfel, der die Umschrift teilt//Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Exemplar der westfälischen Privatsammlung „Mehrfachportraits auf Münzen und Medaillen". (Germany, Silesia, duchy of Liegnitz-Brieg, John Christian and George Rudolf, 1602-21, klippe thaler of 1621, Reichenstein mint. Obverse: half-length portraits of the brothers facing each other, imperial orb in the legend; reverse: triple helmeted and quartered arms. Extremely rare, very fine.)"

The dukes issued several thalers in 1621, including KM 184 (shown here), KM 169/Dav-7718 (round, struck 1617-21), KM 267/Dav-7720 (rare) and KM 268/Dav-7720A (rare). This one, in klippe format, was also struck 1618-19. The line lapsed in 1675 and the properties were annexed by the Hapsburgs.
