Sincona sale 100, lot 1046

This specimen was lot 1046 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 13,000 CHF (about US$19,594 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Schlesien, Herzogtum, Johann Christian (allein), 1621-1639. Taler 1621, Breslau. Stempelschneider von H. Rieger. +D:G+IOHANES+CHRISTIANVS+DV:+ Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts mit umgelegter Feldbinde zwischen der geteilten Jahreszahl 16 - 21. Rv. SIL.LIGNI. - .ET.BREGE. Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen, unten die geteilte Stempelschneidersignatur. Sehr selten. Gutes vorzüglich. Herrliche Patina. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 233, Osnabrück, Juni 2013, Los 233. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, John Christian alone, 1621-39, thaler of 1621, Breslau mint. Obverse: armoted and sashed bust right divides the date; reverse: three helmeted, quartered arms, engraver's initials below. Very rare, About Uncirculated, Most attractively toned.)"

The dukes issued several thalers in 1621, including KM 184/Dav-7718B (klippe), KM 169/Dav-7718 (round, struck 1617-21), KM 267/Dav-7720 (shown here) and KM 268/Dav-7720A (rare). This one was struck 1621 only. The line lapsed in 1675 and the properties were annexed by the Hapsburgs.
