Silesia in 1648; Brieg is S of Breslau and Liegnitz is NW

This specimen was lot 1572 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 4,000 (about US$5,271 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Taler 1609. Gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, thaler of 1609, good extremely fine.)"

Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. This type, listed for 1609 only, is rare like all the thalers of this locality. The coinage ceased when the last of the local dukes died in 1675.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
