Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg (1)609-CT 2 thaler Dav-7711
This specimen was lot 4409 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$36,739 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHLESIEN, LIEGNITZ-BRIEG, HERZOGTUM, Johann Christian und Georg Rudolf, 1602-1621. Doppelter Reichstaler 1609, Reichenstein. “ D : G . IOHAN · CHRIST · ET · GEORG · RVD · FRA · Die geharnischten Hüftbilder einander gegenüber mit Kommandostäben und umgelegten Feldbinden//DVC · SIL · LIG . - . ET · BREG . 609 · Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen, oben zu den Seiten der mittleren Helmzier die geteilte Signatur CT - Lilie (hochgestellt; Christoph Tuchmann, Münzverwalter in Reichenstein). Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, John Christian and George Rudolf, 1602-21, double thaler of 1609, Reichenstein mint. Obverse: the armored and sashed half-length busts of them facing each other with baton; reverse: triple-helmeted quartered arms divides the engraver's initials. Extremely rare, very fine.)"
Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. The SCWC notes four different double thalers for 1609: KM 78/Dav-7709, KM 79/Dav-7709A, KM 80/Dav-7709B and KM 81/Dav-7711, shown here. None have images, making attribution dfficult. We don't know why the leading digit of the date was omitted.
